Pak Choi Hydroponic Problems & Fixes

Stems develop better texture at EC 2.0-2.5 but leaves thicken and toughen at high EC - keeping EC 1.5-1.8 produces uniformly tender baby pak choi.

Last updated

Pak choi grown hydroponically encounters inner-leaf tip burn, bolting before heading, and soft watery stems at low EC as its most common problems. Understanding the plant's core thresholds - pH 6.0-7.0, EC 1.5-2.5 mS/cm, water temp 15-22°C, and 12-14h of daily light - helps diagnose problems before they become crop failures.

Quick-Reference Thresholds

| Parameter | Target Range | Warning Sign if Low | Warning Sign if High | |-----------|--------------|--------------------|-----------------------| | pH | 6.0–7.0 | Fe/Mn lockout | Nutrient unavailability above 7.0 | | EC (mS/cm) | 1.5–2.5 | Soft, watery, floppy stems | Leaves thickening and toughening | | Water Temp (°C) | 15–22°C | Slow growth | Tip burn and bolting risk | | Light (h/day) | 12–14h | Slow, loose growth | Bolting risk above 14h |

Common Problems & Fixes

| Symptom | Root Cause | Fix | |---------|------------|-----| | Inner-leaf tip burn (brown tips on new leaves) | Insufficient transpiration - NOT Ca deficiency | Add oscillating fan; do NOT adjust Ca levels | | Bolting before compact head forms | Temps above 24°C or photoperiod above 14h | Keep below 22°C; reduce to 12h; select Canton Dwarf or Joi Choi (more heat-tolerant) | | Soft, watery, floppy stems | EC below 1.5 or excess nitrogen | Raise EC to 2.0; ensure balanced N-P-K ratio | | Tough, thick leaves | EC above 2.5 sustained for more than 2 weeks | Reduce to 1.5-1.8 for tender baby pak choi | | Yellowing between leaf veins | Mn or Fe deficiency from pH drift | Check pH; correct to 6.0-6.5; add chelated micronutrients |

Normal vs. Worry: What to Watch

  • Normal: White stem base with green leaf blade - this is the normal bicolour of pak choi.
  • Normal: Outer leaves slightly more open than inner leaves - head tightens as plant matures.
  • Worry: Brown papery edges on innermost new leaves - tip burn from poor air circulation; add a fan.
  • Worry: Central stem elongating rapidly with leaves becoming narrow - bolting; harvest immediately.
  • Worry: Stems so soft they collapse when the plant is lifted - EC too low; raise immediately.

Prevention Checklist

  • [ ] Run an oscillating fan continuously to prevent tip burn without nutrient adjustments
  • [ ] Keep EC at 1.5-1.8 for baby pak choi; raise to 2.0-2.5 for full-size mature heads
  • [ ] Maintain photoperiod at 12h strictly to prevent bolting
  • [ ] Keep solution below 22°C; pak choi is a cool-weather crop
  • [ ] Check pH every 2-3 days; maintain 6.0-6.5
  • [ ] Harvest baby pak choi at 30-35 days; full heads at 50-60 days
  • [ ] Space at 15-20cm centres for compact head development
