Basil Nutrient, pH & EC Guide for Hydroponics

Basil's essential-oil quality peaks in the days just before flowering - harvest timing relative to bud development determines linalool content more than any nutrient adjustment.

Basil is a warm-loving aromatic herb with moderate nutrient demands and a strong sensitivity to both cold and flowering onset. Its essential-oil profile - dominated by linalool in sweet basil cultivars - is highly time-sensitive around anthesis (flower opening). Understanding this phenological window is more valuable to a hydroponic basil grower than fine-tuning individual nutrient concentrations.

Deficiency Identification

  • Interveinal yellowing on mid-age leaves: Magnesium deficiency. Basil shows this before most other herbs due to rapid growth and high Mg demand relative to supply at standard EC. Add Epsom salt immediately.
  • New-leaf chlorosis with green veins: Iron deficiency. Confirm pH is below 6.5 where Fe-EDTA remains soluble. Reduce pH by 0.2 units and supplement chelated iron.
  • Dark purple colouration of stems and leaf undersides: Phosphorus deficiency, especially common in seedlings below 18°C. Increase temperature and ensure adequate P at 30–50 ppm.
  • Soft, large, pale-green leaves: Excess nitrogen. Reduce nitrogen concentration and increase K and Ca proportionally to tighten leaf structure and improve oil content.

Feeding Schedule Notes

Begin seedlings at EC 0.6–0.8 and step up by 0.2–0.3 mS/cm every 5–7 days. Once plants reach 15–20 cm with 4–6 true leaf pairs, maintain EC at 1.0–1.4 and begin regular pinching above node 3 or 4 to encourage bushy growth. As plants approach maturity, watch for flower buds: the pre-anthesis window (buds visible but not yet open) is when linalool peaks. Harvest immediately when you observe bud formation, or pinch buds aggressively to delay. Solution temperature should stay at 20–24°C; below 18°C stresses basil and increases susceptibility to Fusarium wilt.

Research note: Harvesting 3–4 days after bud appearance reduces linalool (the primary aroma compound) by up to 30% compared to pre-anthesis harvest.
