Chives are a reliable, productive hydroponic allium that regrows well after repeated cutting. Their characteristic mild onion-garlic flavour is driven by allicin and related sulfur compounds - the same chemistry as all allium family members, but at lower intensity than onions or garlic. Beyond sulfur supply in the nutrient solution, the most impactful production decision is planting density: clump sowing dramatically outperforms single-plant culture over a 12-week production cycle.

Deficiency Identification
- Bland, flavourless stems: Sulfur deficiency. The most impactful deficiency for eating quality. Supplement SO4 immediately.
- Soft or collapsing stems: Excess nitrogen or potassium deficiency. Reduce N and ensure K is at 150–200 ppm.
- Yellowing from oldest stems upward: Nitrogen deficiency. Increase total EC by 0.2–0.3 mS/cm and recheck after 5 days.
- Slow regrowth after cutting: Root zone health issue or EC too low. Check roots for browning and verify EC is at 1.2–1.6.
Feeding Schedule Notes
Sow 8–12 chive seeds per net cup from the start - this clump-sowing approach produces 40–60% more total biomass over a 12-week cycle than single-plant culture and avoids the need for precision thinning. Begin at EC 0.6–0.8 and step up to 1.2–1.6 once stems reach 5–8 cm.
