Cucumbers are among the most productive fruiting crops in hydroponics, capable of producing fruit within 6–8 weeks of transplant. The critical variety decision that determines whether indoor cucumber production succeeds or fails completely is choosing a parthenocarpic variety - one that sets fruit without pollination. Standard outdoor slicing cucumbers require bee pollination to set fruit; without it, every flower drops. In a sealed indoor grow space, only parthenocarpic types will produce a crop.

Note on PPM: Values above use a 500 conversion factor (EC × 500 = PPM). Some meters use 700 - multiply by 1.4 to convert.

Deficiency Identification
- All flowers dropping without fruit set: Variety is not parthenocarpic. Standard slicing cucumbers cannot set fruit indoors without pollination. Switch variety before adjusting any nutrients.
- Bitter cucumbers: Potassium or calcium deficiency, or EC too low during fruit swell. Check K:N ratio and raise EC to 2.0–2.5 if still in vegetative range.
- Interveinal yellowing on older leaves: Magnesium deficiency, very common at fruiting EC. Supplement MgSO4.
- Hollow fruit: Boron or calcium deficiency, or inconsistent watering causing irregular cell expansion. Supplement Ca, add B at 0.3–0.5 ppm, and stabilise irrigation schedule.
Feeding Schedule Notes
Start parthenocarpic cucumber seedlings at EC 1.0–1.4 and ramp quickly to 1.5–1.8 as the vines develop. Trellis vertically from day one - cucumbers are vigorous climbers and untrained plants lose productivity rapidly. As first fruit sets on the lower nodes, shift to a fruiting formula with K:N 2:1 and raise EC to 2.0–2.5. Maintain consistent watering - cucumber fruit quality is highly sensitive to irrigation inconsistency, which causes bitter compounds and hollow centres. Solution temperature at 20–25°C; below 18°C dramatically slows growth. Prune all lateral shoots to a single main stem (cordon) and remove the lowest 3–4 leaves as the vine climbs to improve airflow.
