Fennel is a distinctive hydroponic crop with an anise character driven by trans-anethole, its primary essential-oil compound. There is a significant difference in anethole concentration between the feathery fronds (which growers can harvest continuously) and the swollen bulb base (the commercially sold vegetable). Hydroponic fennel grown for frond production is measurably more intense in aroma and flavour than the bulb fennel sold in supermarkets, making frond-harvest a viable high-value production strategy.

Deficiency Identification

  • Weak anise aroma in fronds: Excess nitrogen diluting anethole, or harvest fronds rather than waiting for bulk. Reduce N concentration and harvest fronds at 15–20 cm before they become too coarse.
  • Tip dieback on frond ends: Calcium transport limitation in fast-growing fronds. Add airflow and verify Ca at 120–180 ppm.
  • Yellowing from oldest growth upward: Nitrogen deficiency. Increase EC slightly while keeping nitrogen conservative.
  • No bulb formation (for bulb fennel): Fennel bulb formation requires short days (under 12 hours) or vernalization. In standard indoor production with 14–16 hour photoperiods, fennel will produce abundant fronds but not swell into a bulb - manage photoperiod if bulb production is the goal.

Feeding Schedule Notes

Fennel is best direct-sown into net cups - like dill, it dislikes root disturbance and transplanted seedlings often stall or bolt prematurely. Germination in 7–14 days at 15–22°C. Start at EC 0.6–0.8 and step up to 1.0–1.4 over the first two weeks. For frond production, harvest outer frond branches regularly once plants reach 30–40 cm. The frond-harvest strategy is more practical in most indoor setups than bulb production, which requires photoperiod manipulation and more space. Maintain nitrogen at the conservative lower bound throughout to preserve anethole concentration. Solution temperature at 15–22°C; temperatures above 25°C accelerate bolting.
