Oregano's culinary value is almost entirely determined by carvacrol content - the primary essential-oil compound responsible for its characteristic intense flavour. Two factors drive carvacrol beyond nutrient management: subspecies selection (Greek oregano vs common oregano represents a 3–5x difference in carvacrol) and irrigation pattern (intermittent cycles produce higher oil content than continuous flow). Low nitrogen and mild water stress are the nutrient-management priorities.

Deficiency Identification
- Weak oregano flavour in healthy-looking plants: Most commonly excess nitrogen. Reduce N concentration and switch to intermittent pump cycles (15 min on/45 min off or similar) to apply mild root-zone stress.
- Interveinal yellowing on older leaves: Magnesium deficiency. Supplement MgSO4 at 0.3–0.5 g/L.
- Soft, pale, rapidly growing leaves: Classic over-feeding syndrome. Oregano from low-nutrient Mediterranean soils performs better on leaner solution than most growers expect.
- Poor germination from seed: Greek oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum) germinates poorly from commercial seed; propagate from cuttings of a verified subspecies for consistent carvacrol content.
Feeding Schedule Notes
Greek oregano is by far the preferred subspecies for culinary production - standard commercial "oregano" seed produces Origanum vulgare with dramatically lower carvacrol. Source plants or cuttings from a confirmed Greek oregano source. Root cuttings at EC 0.5 before stepping up to 1.0–1.5. Once established, use an intermittent pump timer (15 minutes on, 45 minutes off in NFT or DWC) rather than continuous flow - the brief root-zone dry cycle between irrigations creates mild oxidative stress that research has linked to higher essential-oil synthesis. Hold nitrogen conservatively throughout; high-N oregano is a common and easily avoided quality problem.
