Sage is a woody Mediterranean herb with very low nutrient demands and a complex essential-oil profile that changes significantly with plant age. Younger plants produce a eucalyptus-like cineole character, while the classic sage flavour associated with culinary use - dominated by thujone - only develops in more mature plants. This makes the starting material (cuttings vs seed) an important quality decision, as cuttings from established sage plants carry the mature oil profile from the first harvest.

Deficiency Identification
- Cineole-dominant eucalyptus aroma in place of expected sage character: Plant is too young (under 6–8 weeks from seed). Use cuttings from established sage for immediate thujone-forward flavour.
- Distorted or small young leaves: Zinc deficiency from excess phosphorus. Reduce P concentration and confirm pH is below 6.5 to maintain Zn availability.
- Wilting despite adequate solution level: Sage is highly sensitive to waterlogged roots. Use intermittent pump cycles with extended dry periods and ensure excellent medium drainage.
- Interveinal yellowing of new growth: Iron deficiency if pH is above 6.5. Lower pH and add chelated iron.
Feeding Schedule Notes
Sage is most efficiently propagated from cuttings - not only because seed germination is slow and variable, but because cuttings from established plants carry the mature thujone-dominant oil profile from their first harvest, skipping the cineole-heavy juvenile phase entirely. Root cuttings in plain water or at EC 0.3–0.5. Once rooted, step up slowly to 0.8–1.2. Sage's Mediterranean origin means it prefers drier root-zone conditions than most hydroponic crops: use intermittent irrigation with long dry periods between cycles. Avoid phosphorus-heavy formulas. Maintain solution temperature at 18–24°C and ensure plants receive high light intensity (200+ µmol PPFD) for good oil development.
