Vietnamese coriander (rau ram, laksa leaf) is a warm-climate herb from the buckwheat family - not related to true cilantro - that delivers a similar peppery-citrus flavour without any of the bolting problems that make cilantro management difficult indoors. It thrives at warmer temperatures than true cilantro and produces continuously under the long photoperiods typical of indoor grow rooms, making it a practical alternative for growers who have struggled with cilantro going to seed.

Deficiency Identification
- Reduced aromatic intensity or coriander character: Temperature below 20°C is the most common cause. Vietnamese coriander evolved in tropical conditions and essential-oil synthesis drops significantly in cool grow rooms. Raise temperature before adjusting nutrients.
- Yellowing from oldest leaves upward: Nitrogen deficiency. Increase EC by 0.2–0.3 mS/cm.
- Marginal scorch on older leaves: Potassium deficiency or EC too high. Check K:N balance and reduce EC if above 2.0.
- Slow establishment from cuttings: Normal at temperatures below 22°C. Maintain cutting medium at 22–26°C; rooting accelerates significantly in warm water.
Feeding Schedule Notes
Vietnamese coriander does not produce viable seed in most cultivation settings and must be propagated from stem cuttings - which root effortlessly in plain water at 22–26°C within 7–14 days. Once rooted, introduce at EC 0.4–0.6 and step up to 1.0–1.4 over two weeks. Maintain ambient and solution temperatures above 20°C throughout - this is the primary growing requirement, and flavour quality drops noticeably in cooler conditions. Harvest 8–12 cm tip shoots regularly to maintain a compact, bushy plant and prevent the slightly straggly growth habit that develops when shoots are left unpruned. Unlike true cilantro, Vietnamese coriander does not bolt under long photoperiods or warm temperatures, making it manageable for months without any photoperiod intervention.
