Hydroponics removes the variables that make Arugula frustrating outdoors: inconsistent moisture, compacted soil, and seasonal weather. With precise pH, EC, and light control you can expect reliable, repeatable results year-round in an apartment or any indoor space.

Data point worth knowing: Arugula's signature peppery bite comes from glucosinolates (particularly glucoerucin), and their concentration increases under mild water stress - running the reservoir 20% lower between top-ups (without letting roots dry) produces noticeably sharper flavour than keeping the reservoir perpetually full.

Key nutrients to monitor:

  • Sulfur: key to glucosinolate and glucoerucin synthesis
  • Low nitrogen preference: excess N dilutes peppery compounds and causes excess sappiness
  • Calcium and magnesium: at balanced 3:1 ratio for brassica family

Keep pH within the stated range; nutrients become unavailable (locked out) when pH drifts even one unit outside the window. Check with a calibrated pH meter - pH pen strips are not accurate enough for hydroponics.


Step-by-step growing

  1. Surface-sow seeds directly in rockwool or coconut-coir plugs; no need to pre-soak.
  2. Germination in 3–5 days at 18–20 °C.
  3. Transplant or grow in shallow NFT channels at low EC 0.8–1.2.
  4. For peppery flavour, allow reservoir level to dip slightly between refills.
  5. Cut 2–3 cm above the crown at 18–25 days; 2–3 regrowth cuts are typical.

Peak flavour at 18–22 days. Once flowered, leaves turn intensely bitter - harvest before flowers open. Use fresh; wilts within 2 days at room temperature.

Expected yield: Baby leaf: 30–50 g/tray; regrows 2–3 times

Regular harvesting is not just practical - it usually encourages the plant to produce more. Harvesting too infrequently often leads to bolting (in leafy crops) or quality decline.
