Hydroponics removes the variables that make Mint frustrating outdoors: inconsistent moisture, compacted soil, and seasonal weather. With precise pH, EC, and light control you can expect reliable, repeatable results year-round in an apartment or any indoor space.

Data point worth knowing: Menthol content in peppermint (Mentha × piperita) is highest when the plant is harvested at early-bloom stage (10–20% flower open), not at vegetative stage - contrary to the standard advice to harvest before flowering. Research from the University of Illinois found menthol concentrations 18–22% higher at early bloom than at peak vegetative growth.

Key nutrients to monitor:

Keep pH within the stated range; nutrients become unavailable (locked out) when pH drifts even one unit outside the window. Check with a calibrated pH meter - pH pen strips are not accurate enough for hydroponics.


Step-by-step growing

  1. Propagate from stem cuttings (5–8 cm), not seed - seed-grown mint has unpredictable flavour.
  2. Place cuttings in water or nutrient solution (EC 0.5) until roots are 2–3 cm (5–10 days).
  3. Transplant to dedicated system; do NOT mix with other herbs - mint's root exudates can inhibit neighbours.
  4. Harvest stems to 5 cm above the crown; new growth emerges in 10–14 days.
  5. Refresh nutrient solution every 7–10 days to prevent salt accumulation.
