Hydroponics removes the variables that make Pea Shoots frustrating outdoors: inconsistent moisture, compacted soil, and seasonal weather. With precise pH, EC, and light control you can expect reliable, repeatable results year-round in an apartment or any indoor space.
Data point worth knowing: Pea shoots can be harvested twice from the same sowing: the first cut at 10–14 days removes the shoot tips; a second harvest of the side shoots can be taken 7–10 days later. The second harvest is lower in volume (40–60% of the first) but pea-shoot regrowth after cutting is uniquely reliable among microgreens because the embryonic stem tissue survives the initial cut - most other microgreens do not regrow after the cotyledon cut.

Key nutrients to monitor:
- Folate: pea shoots are among the higher microgreen sources of dietary folate
- Vitamin C: elevated in shoot tips versus mature pea plant tissue
- Protein: peas are legumes; shoot stage retains significant seed protein as the cotyledons deploy
Keep pH within the stated range; nutrients become unavailable (locked out) when pH drifts even one unit outside the window. Check with a calibrated pH meter - pH pen strips are not accurate enough for hydroponics.
Step-by-step growing
- Soak whole dried peas 8–12 hours before sowing; drain and rinse.
- Spread in a dense layer on moistened grow medium; seeds can touch but should not pile up.
- Blackout for 3–4 days until sprouts reach 3–5 cm.
- Expose to light 12–16 h/day; bottom-water daily.
- First harvest at 10–14 days, cutting above the lowest true leaf node for regrowth potential.

Harvest & nutrition
Harvest the top 8–10 cm of shoots. Pea shoots are best used fresh within 3–4 days; refrigerate in a sealed container. Unlike most microgreens they sauté well and are excellent in stir-fries, soups, and dumplings. Sweet flavour is most pronounced in the first harvest.
Expected yield: 150–250 g per 10×20 cm tray per cycle
Regular harvesting is not just practical - it usually encourages the plant to produce more. Harvesting too infrequently often leads to bolting (in leafy crops) or quality decline.
