Hydroponics removes the variables that make Spinach frustrating outdoors: inconsistent moisture, compacted soil, and seasonal weather. With precise pH, EC, and light control you can expect reliable, repeatable results year-round in an apartment or any indoor space.

Data point worth knowing: Spinach grown hydroponically at EC 2.0–2.3 mS/cm accumulates measurably higher oxalate concentrations than at EC 1.2–1.6; growers managing oxalate intake should use lower-EC solutions and harvest baby-leaf stage (25–30 days) rather than mature stage.

Key nutrients to monitor:

  • Iron: spinach is a top dietary iron source; chelated iron in solution ensures uptake
  • Manganese: pairs with iron for chlorophyll function
  • Nitrate: forms the basis of spinach's natural nitrate content

Keep pH within the stated range; nutrients become unavailable (locked out) when pH drifts even one unit outside the window. Check with a calibrated pH meter - pH pen strips are not accurate enough for hydroponics.


Step-by-step growing

  1. Pre-soak seeds 12 h in room-temperature water to speed germination.
  2. Germinate at 15–18 °C (spinach germinates poorly above 24 °C).
  3. Transplant at day 10–12; set EC to 1.8, pH 6.5.
  4. Run lights 10–12 h/day; spinach bolts quickly under long summer-like photoperiods.
  5. Harvest outer leaves continuously or cut the whole head 2 cm above the crown.

Expected yield: 50–80 g per plant per harvest

Regular harvesting is not just practical - it usually encourages the plant to produce more. Harvesting too infrequently often leads to bolting (in leafy crops) or quality decline.
