Hydroponics removes the variables that make Stevia frustrating outdoors: inconsistent moisture, compacted soil, and seasonal weather. With precise pH, EC, and light control you can expect reliable, repeatable results year-round in an apartment or any indoor space.
Data point worth knowing: Steviol glycoside concentration in stevia leaves is highest just before the plant flowers - the leaves reach maximum rebaudioside-A content (the sweetest glycoside, 200–300× the sweetness of sucrose by weight) approximately 2–4 weeks before the first flower opens. Once flowers open, glycoside concentration drops sharply as the plant redirects resources to seed production. Monitoring for the first flower bud and harvesting immediately is more impactful than any nutrient or light adjustment.

Key nutrients to monitor:
- Low overall nutrient demand: stevia is adapted to low-fertility soils
- Potassium: modest support for steviol glycoside synthesis
- Avoid high nitrogen: excess N produces vegetative growth with diluted glycoside concentration
Keep pH within the stated range; nutrients become unavailable (locked out) when pH drifts even one unit outside the window. Check with a calibrated pH meter - pH pen strips are not accurate enough for hydroponics.
Step-by-step growing
- Start from cuttings (most reliable) or sow seed at 22–25 °C - stevia seed has low germination rate (40–60%).
- Root cuttings in plain water or EC 0.4 for 10–14 days.
- Transplant to NFT or small DWC at EC 0.8–1.2, pH 6.5.
- Provide 14–18 h of light; stevia is a short-day plant and will flower under <12 h daylength.
- Harvest all stems just before the first flower bud opens; dry at 40–45 °C for 12–24 h.

Harvest & nutrition
Dry harvested stems at 40–45 °C until crispy (12–24 hours). Crumble dried leaves and store in a sealed jar - they retain potency for 6–12 months. Use 1 dried leaf to sweeten a cup of tea. Fresh leaves can be added directly to beverages.
Expected yield: 20–40 g dried leaf per plant per season; 2–3 harvests
Regular harvesting is not just practical - it usually encourages the plant to produce more. Harvesting too infrequently often leads to bolting (in leafy crops) or quality decline.
