Hydroponics removes the variables that make Tarragon frustrating outdoors: inconsistent moisture, compacted soil, and seasonal weather. With precise pH, EC, and light control you can expect reliable, repeatable results year-round in an apartment or any indoor space.

Data point worth knowing: True French tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus var. sativa) is sterile and produces no viable seed - any seed sold as 'tarragon' is Russian tarragon (A. dracunculus), which has almost no flavour. The only way to grow culinary-quality tarragon is from divisions or cuttings of a verified French tarragon plant. This botanical fact makes tarragon unique among common herbs as a crop that is entirely propagation-dependent.

Keep pH within the stated range; nutrients become unavailable (locked out) when pH drifts even one unit outside the window. Check with a calibrated pH meter - pH pen strips are not accurate enough for hydroponics.


Step-by-step growing

  1. Obtain French tarragon plant divisions or stem cuttings from a verified source - not seed.
  2. Root cuttings in EC 0.5 solution for 10–14 days.
  3. Transplant to NFT channel; EC 1.0–1.4, pH 6.5.
  4. Harvest stem tips above the third leaf pair; new growth in 14–21 days.
  5. Divide root mass every 6 months to maintain vigour - tarragon declines if rootbound.

Regular harvesting is not just practical - it usually encourages the plant to produce more. Harvesting too infrequently often leads to bolting (in leafy crops) or quality decline.
