English thyme (Thymus vulgaris) averages 40–60% thymol in its essential oil; lemon thyme averages only 5–10%. If thymol content matters (for culinary potency), variety selection matters far more than any growing parameter adjustment.

- Harvest young green stems; leave woody base intact. Harvest before flowers open for strongest flavour.
