I bought a clear acrylic system that looks great but I know light will cause algae. What can I wrap it with to block light? Will painting it work or will that off-gas into the water?

Your instinct is right - clear acrylic will cause chronic algae problems without treatment. Here's the correct approach and what to avoid.
Why you should NOT paint the inside
Interior painting (any latex, acrylic, or spray paint) creates real risks in a reservoir context:
- Off-gassing: Most paints off-gas solvents (VOCs), plasticizers, and biocides during curing and for weeks afterward. In a reservoir, these compounds dissolve directly into your nutrient solution.
- Fish and plant toxicity: Even "non-toxic" craft paints contain surfactants and preservatives that are harmful to plant roots at trace concentrations.
- Peeling risk: Paint on plastic peels over time, especially when continuously wet. Flakes can clog pumps and tubing.
The exception: food-safe epoxy coatings (like those used for aquarium tank repair) can be applied to internal surfaces, but the cure time (72–96 hours) and cost make them impractical for this purpose when exterior wrapping achieves the same result.
Best exterior wrapping options
Black-and-white poly sheeting (preferred). Available from any hydroponics supplier or garden center. Apply with black side facing out (absorbs and blocks light) and white side facing in (reflects ambient light away from the reservoir surface). Secure with waterproof tape. This is the commercial standard.
Reflective mylar tape or sheeting. Reflects light away from the reservoir rather than absorbing it. Works well; less durable long-term than poly sheeting but easier to apply and remove for cleaning.
Gorilla Tape or black duct tape. Applied in overlapping layers to the exterior covers most surfaces effectively. Slightly less thorough coverage in corners and curves, but practical for irregular shapes. Check edges every few weeks - tape lifts at seams.
Black craft foam or neoprene sheeting. Cut to shape and wrap the exterior. Holds in place with elastic bands or cable ties. Easy to remove for cleaning, reusable.
Coverage checklist - don't miss these spots
The most common light leak points on clear systems:
- Bottom of reservoir - diffuse light through a table surface can penetrate upward through a clear base
- Lid seams - where the lid meets the reservoir walls
- Net pot openings - even if the reservoir is wrapped, uncovered net pot holes are direct light pathways; use black neoprene collars
- Tubing entry holes - stuff with black foam or wrap tightly with tape
Testing for complete coverage
After wrapping, take the system into a dark room and shine a flashlight from inside - any light escaping shows you where algae will grow. It's the simplest and most reliable test.
If algae is already established
Do a complete teardown clean (10% bleach solution scrub, triple water rinse, H2O2 flush through tubing) before wrapping. Algae spores survive in microscopic crevices and will re-establish if you wrap without cleaning first.
