I have a grow tent and want to do cherry tomatoes hydroponically. Budget is $200–$300. Should I get the AeroGarden Farm XL, build a DWC bucket setup, or go with an Autopot? I'm an intermediate grower.

Great project for an intermediate grower - cherry tomatoes are rewarding in a tent but have specific needs that make system choice important. Let's work through each option honestly.
Option 1: 5-gallon DWC bucket setup (recommended, ~$80–$150)
Best for: Maximum yield, full control, most scalable approach.
A single 5-gallon bucket with net pot lid, air pump, air stone, and quality nutrients runs $40–$60 per plant. Two plants fit a 2×4 tent; a 3×3 tent can handle one large indeterminate plant with a trellis system.
Why DWC works for cherry tomatoes:
- Root system develops unconstrained in a large, oxygenated reservoir
- EC and pH control is precise - critical for fruiting crops where flower set and fruit sizing require specific nutrient ratios
- High dissolved oxygen at root zone supports the high metabolic demands of fruiting
- Easy to observe roots directly for early pathogen detection
What you spend the rest of your budget on: A good LED (at least 200W true draw, full-spectrum) is the actual limiting factor for tomato yield - budget $150–$200 here. A $40 DWC setup under a quality LED will massively outperform a $300 proprietary system under an inadequate light.
The one real DWC challenge: Reservoir temperature management (keep below 72°F). In a grow tent with high-intensity lighting, this may require an aquarium chiller.
Option 2: AeroGarden Farm XL (~$300–$350, over budget)
The Farm XL is 24 pods at 60W LED. The problem for cherry tomatoes is the light: 60W is adequate for leafy greens and herbs but is insufficient for fruiting crops, which need 400–600 µmol/m²/s PPFD for productive fruit set. The Farm XL in testing delivers approximately 150–200 µmol/m²/s - about one-third of what tomatoes need.
AeroGarden specifically notes the Farm is optimized for leafy greens and herbs. Cherry tomatoes will grow but will produce modest yields - perhaps 300–600g per plant versus 3–8 kg in an adequately lit DWC setup.
Skip the Farm XL for fruiting plants. It excels at what it's designed for (herbs and salad greens); cherry tomatoes are not that use case.
Option 3: Autopot (~$50–$100 per pot)
Important clarification: Autopot is not hydroponic. It's a passive sub-irrigation system that uses standard peat-based or coco coir substrate. Plants sit in pots on top of a tray connected to a reservoir via an AquaValve - gravity fills the tray to a set depth and roots wick moisture up.
Autopot produces excellent tomato yields and is well-regarded by intermediate growers. However:
- Requires substrate (coco coir is standard - $15–$30 per pot)
- Not the learning experience of true hydroponics
- Still requires quality lighting (same constraint as DWC)
- Lower risk of root rot than DWC because roots aren't submerged
Choose Autopot if you want the passive watering convenience of a self-contained system without the complexity of nutrient solution management. Choose DWC if you want to grow faster and learn nutrient chemistry.
The actual budget allocation
Whatever system you choose, the money split matters:
- Light: 50–60% of budget - a 200–300W true-draw LED (Spider Farmer, Mars Hydro, or equivalent) is what delivers tomato yield
- System: 15–25% of budget - DWC buckets or Autopot pots
- Nutrients + pH management: 15–20% - a quality 3-part formula and accurate pH/EC meters
A $150 LED over a $50 DWC setup will outperform a $300 proprietary system under a weak light every time for fruiting crops.
