I want to grow leafy greens continuously. I've narrowed it down to DWC or NFT but can't find a definitive comparison. Which uses less water? Which is easier to maintain? Which produces more per square foot?

Both systems work extremely well for continuous lettuce production. The "better" answer depends on scale, tolerance for maintenance, and how much you care about water efficiency.
How each system works
DWC (Deep Water Culture): Plant roots hang into a reservoir of aerated, nutrient-rich solution. Oxygen is delivered via air stones and pump. Plants sit in net pots above a tote, bucket, or channel.
NFT (Nutrient Film Technique): A thin, continuous stream of nutrient solution flows along the bottom of slightly tilted channels, passing over plant roots. The upper root zone is exposed to air; the tips touch the thin film. Requires a pump, channels, and a separate reservoir.
Water and nutrient efficiency
NFT wins clearly here. In a DWC system, each plant site needs 1–3 gallons of standing solution to keep roots submerged. In an NFT system, the same reservoir serves an entire channel - you might run 8–12 plants off one 5-gallon reservoir that recirculates.
For continuous production, this means:
- DWC at 12 sites: ~18–24 gallons of nutrient solution required
- NFT at 12 sites: ~6–8 gallons in the reservoir serving all channels
NFT also loses less solution to evaporation because roots aren't constantly splashing in a large open tote.
Pump failure tolerance
DWC is more forgiving. If your air pump fails in DWC, plants have hours to a full day of oxygen reserves in the reservoir before stress becomes critical. If your NFT pump fails, roots begin drying out within 30–60 minutes - especially in summer when ambient temperatures accelerate desiccation. NFT requires a reliable pump and ideally a backup.
Yield per square foot
At equivalent light levels and nutrient management, yield per square foot is roughly equivalent. NFT channels can sometimes be stacked or arranged more efficiently than DWC totes, giving NFT an edge in dense configurations.
Ease of build and maintenance
DWC is simpler to build from scratch (a storage tote, net pot lid, air pump, air stone, and nutrients). Fewer failure points. Reservoir changes every 2–3 weeks are straightforward.
NFT requires more precision in setup: channels must be tilted at exactly 1–4° for proper film flow (too flat = standing water; too steep = roots dry out). Getting the slope right is the main learning curve.

Recommendation
Start with DWC if you're new to hydroponics - the failure modes are gentler and the build is simpler. Move to NFT when you want to scale past 12 plant sites or want the water efficiency for year-round continuous growing.
