EC by growth stage

Basil's nutrient needs change significantly as it develops:

EC rising over time: Plants are drinking water but leaving nutrients behind. This indicates mild stress - check temperature (above 75°F can cause this) and dilute slightly with plain water if EC climbs above 2.5.

Checking EC daily is good practice until you understand your plants' uptake pattern. A stable EC that holds within ±0.2 of your target over 24 hours indicates a healthy, actively growing plant.

Nutrient formula notes for basil

Basil responds well to slightly elevated calcium and magnesium compared to general-purpose formulas. If you're using a 3-part formula (Grow, Bloom, Micro), keep the "Micro" (which contains calcium and iron) at full dose even during vegetative growth. Cal-Mag supplementation at 1–2 mL/gallon benefits basil specifically because high-EC solution can create localized calcium competition at the root membrane.
