My basil roots are turning slightly brown but there's no slime and the plant looks healthy. How do I know if this is the start of pythium or just normal oxidation?

The good news: a plant that looks healthy above the waterline and has brown-but-firm roots almost certainly does not have active Pythium. Root browning without slime is very commonly normal discoloration. Here's how to know for certain.

The three-test diagnosis

Test 1: The squeeze test. Pull a root tip out of the solution and squeeze it gently between your thumb and index finger. Healthy roots - even brown ones - are firm and springy. Pythium-infected roots are soft and mushy; the cortex (outer layer) slides off the inner vascular strand when compressed. If your roots pass the squeeze test, you're almost certainly not dealing with active rot.

Test 2: The smell test. Hold a root cluster near your nose. Healthy roots, even nutrient-stained ones, smell faintly earthy or neutral. Pythium infection produces a distinctly sour, swampy, or sulfurous odor. No unpleasant smell = very likely not rot.

Test 3: Crown and stem check. Pythium moves upward; if your basil stem base (the crown just above the net pot) is firm and green, the plant is not in distress. Soft, discolored, or water-soaked tissue at the crown is a serious warning sign.

Common causes of cosmetic root browning

Several routine factors turn roots brown without indicating disease:

  • Tannins from nutrients. Many organic and some mineral nutrient concentrates contain compounds that stain root surfaces tan or light brown - especially products with humic or fulvic acid.
  • Mineral oxidation. Iron and other micronutrients can precipitate onto root surfaces, creating a reddish-brown coating that's purely cosmetic.
  • Light exposure. Even brief exposure to light triggers mild oxidation on root surfaces. This is why root color in systems with any light leaks deteriorates faster.
  • Age. Older root sections further from the root tip naturally brown as the plant prioritizes active absorption through new white tip growth.

When to worry

Upgrade your concern level if any of the following appear:

  • Slime coating visible on roots
  • Mushy texture confirmed by squeeze test
  • Sour or swampy odor
  • Plant wilting despite adequate water
  • Crown softness or discoloration
  • Multiple plants affected simultaneously (Pythium spreads through shared reservoir water)

Preventive steps worth taking now

Even if this is just cosmetic browning, basil in DWC is worth protecting proactively:

  1. Ensure reservoir temperature stays below 68°F (20°C).
  2. Confirm your air pump provides adequate bubbling - increase if sluggish.
  3. Block all light leaks from the reservoir lid.
  4. Consider adding Bacillus subtilis (Hydroguard or equivalent) as a preventive biological control - it colonizes root surfaces and outcompetes Pythium before infection takes hold.
