What's the best product to prevent root rot? I've seen Hydroguard recommended a lot but there are also cheaper alternatives with beneficial bacteria. Worth the premium?

Hydroguard is genuinely effective, and the community consensus recommending it is well-founded - but it's not the only option, and it's worth understanding why it works before choosing a product.

Why beneficial bacteria work

Root rot in hydroponics is almost always caused by Pythium species - oomycetes (water molds) that colonize root surfaces in warm, low-oxygen water. Beneficial bacteria products work through two mechanisms:

  1. Competitive exclusion - beneficial bacteria colonize root surfaces first, physically blocking Pythium attachment sites
  2. Direct suppression - certain Bacillus strains produce antifungal compounds (lipopeptides like iturin A) that disrupt Pythium's cell membranes

Hydroguard's active strain - Bacillus amyloliquefaciens D747 - does both.

Hydroguard: what you're paying for

At roughly $25–$30 for 8 oz, Hydroguard is expensive per dose (1–2 mL per gallon per week). What you get for the price:

  • Consistent CFU (colony-forming unit) count validated by the manufacturer
  • Shelf life of approximately 2 years when refrigerated
  • Concentrated formula - a little goes a long way
  • Strong community track record across DWC, NFT, and Kratky systems

Cheaper alternatives that work

Southern Ag Garden Friendly Fungicide (~$15 for 16 oz) contains Bacillus subtilis QST 713 - a different but closely related strain with well-documented activity against Pythium. Many growers use this with results comparable to Hydroguard. Slightly higher dose rates.

Great White Premium Mycorrhizae adds both mycorrhizal fungi and Bacillus strains - useful if you're also running media-based systems where mycorrhizae have a role, though mycorrhizae are largely irrelevant in pure DWC where roots live in solution.

RECHARGE (dry biological concentrate) combines Bacillus strains with kelp and humic acid. Works well but costs roughly the same as Hydroguard per gallon treated.

DIY approach - Lactobacillus serum (LABS) from fermented rice wash is a no-cost folk remedy with some community support but no standardized CFU count - hard to dose reliably.

The honest priority ranking

Products matter less than these fundamentals:

  1. Keep reservoir temperature below 68°F (20°C) - this is the single biggest factor
  2. Maintain vigorous aeration - minimum 1 watt of air pump per gallon of reservoir
  3. Block all light from the reservoir - algae compete with roots and create nutrient-rich zones where Pythium thrives
  4. Change reservoir water every 1–2 weeks - stale solution accumulates organic matter that feeds pathogens

If you have all four dialed in, even cheap beneficial bacteria products will work. If water temperature is 74°F+, even Hydroguard won't fully protect you.

Bottom line

Hydroguard at 1 mL/gallon weekly works out to roughly $0.003 per gallon treated - genuinely not expensive in context. If you want to save money, Southern Ag Garden Friendly Fungicide is the most direct like-for-like substitute. The biggest mistake is relying on any product as a substitute for temperature management.
