I've read conflicting things - some say tomatoes are day-neutral and can handle 20 hours of light, others say they need 8 hours of dark to fruit properly. What's actually true?

The conflicting information you've read reflects an important distinction: tomatoes are day-neutral for flowering induction (they'll initiate flowers regardless of day length) but are not indifferent to photoperiod for overall plant performance and fruit yield.
The day-neutral confusion
"Day-neutral" in horticulture means a plant doesn't use photoperiod as a signal to switch from vegetative to reproductive growth. Tomatoes will start forming flower clusters at 8 hours, 16 hours, or 20 hours of light - the flowers appear regardless. This is why you'll see sources say tomatoes can handle 20+ hours.
However, flowering initiation and fruit production are different things.
What actually happens at 20–24 hours of light
Several research programs (including work from University of Arizona's CEAC, one of the leading controlled environment agriculture research groups) have documented that continuous or near-continuous lighting in tomatoes causes:
- Leaf chlorosis - interveinal yellowing from light-induced stress (especially under HPS and some LED spectra)
- Reduced carbohydrate partitioning - the dark period is when phloem actively loads and translocates sugars from leaves to developing fruit; without it, fruit development is impaired
- Increased susceptibility to spider mites - mites thrive under 24-hour conditions
- Long-term reduced fruit set in some cultivars, despite adequate flowering
The correct light schedule for hydroponic tomatoes
16–18 hours on, 6–8 hours off is the research-backed optimum for most tomato varieties. Specific notes:
- Cherry tomato varieties (Sweet 100, Sungold, Black Cherry) generally perform well at 16–18 hours
- Beefsteak-type varieties are more sensitive to continuous light chlorosis
- Keep the dark period consistent - irregular schedules stress plants more than a slightly shorter or longer photoperiod
Light intensity matters more than duration
For fruiting tomatoes, the limiting factor in most home grow tent setups is not photoperiod but PPFD (photosynthetic photon flux density). Tomatoes fruit well at 400–600 µmol/m²/s. Many home LED setups deliver 200–300 µmol/m²/s - meaning the bottleneck is intensity, not hours. Increasing intensity within the 16-hour schedule will outperform adding 4 hours of light at the same low intensity.
Practical recommendation
Run 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark. If you have a high-intensity LED capable of 400+ µmol/m²/s, stay at 16 hours and resist the temptation to extend the photoperiod. If your light is weaker, 18 hours is the maximum - not 20 or 24.
