Why These Systems Work for Wheatgrass
#1 DIY Flat Tray - The only correct approach for wheatgrass
Soak whole wheat berries for 8–12 hours, drain, spread densely on 1–2 inches of coco coir or potting mix in a 10×20 inch tray, cover for 2–3 days of darkness, then expose to 20–30W of LED light at 14–16 hours per day. Water with plain pH-balanced water only - adding any nutrients to the reservoir accelerates mould growth and provides no benefit, since wheatgrass draws all its nutritional content from the wheat berry itself. Harvest at 15–20 cm (day 7–10) by cutting at the base with scissors.
#2 AeroGarden Harvest 360 - Light panel only; listed as a repurposing option
Whole wheat berries cannot be placed in pod net cups, but the Harvest 360's compact 20W LED panel can serve as an overhead light source for a narrow flat tray positioned on the unit's base. What to Watch
Mould is the primary failure mode for wheatgrass - it appears at the soil line when humidity is too high or airflow too low. Use only food-grade or sprouting wheat berries - not treated agricultural seed, which is coated with fungicides harmful to consume. Harvest before the second blade emerges from each stem (the "jointing" stage), as nutritional density and flavour degrade rapidly after this point.
