Key nutrients to monitor:

Keep pH within the stated range; nutrients become unavailable (locked out) when pH drifts even one unit outside the window. Check with a calibrated pH meter - pH pen strips are not accurate enough for hydroponics.
Step-by-step growing
- Soak hard red or hard white wheat berries 8–12 hours; drain and let sprout tails emerge (12 h more).
- Spread in a dense layer on moistened grow medium in a tray with drainage holes.
- Blackout for 2–3 days; remove cover when grass is 3–4 cm tall.
- Water with plain water (no nutrients) from below; keep medium moist but not waterlogged.
- Harvest with scissors at 10–18 cm, just as the first 'jointing' node appears on the blade.

Cut blades 2–3 cm above the medium. Juice immediately - wheatgrass oxidises rapidly and should be consumed within 15 minutes of juicing for peak enzyme activity. Refrigerate cut grass for up to 24 hours if not juicing immediately. A 10×20 cm tray yields approximately 1–2 shots of juice.
