Dill Hydroponic Problems & Fixes

Carvone and limonene peak between 4-6 frond sets and first umbel elongation - once umbels fully open, carvone drops ~20-25%, so harvest timing is critical.

Dill grown hydroponically encounters rapid bolting in warm conditions, poor germination with old seed, and hollow weak stems when boron is lacking as its most common problems. Understanding the plant's core thresholds - pH 5.5-6.5, EC 1.0-1.6 mS/cm, water temp 15-21°C, and 12-14h of daily light - helps diagnose problems before they become crop failures.

Quick-Reference Thresholds

| Parameter | Target Range | Warning Sign if Low | Warning Sign if High | |-----------|--------------|--------------------|-----------------------| | pH | 5.5–6.5 | Fe/Mn lockout | Ca/Mg lockout above 6.5 | | EC (mS/cm) | 1.0–1.6 | Weak hollow stems; poor oil content | Leaf scorch | | Water Temp (°C) | 15–21°C | Very slow germination | Bolting accelerated above 24°C | | Light (h/day) | 12–14h | Leggy, weak, pale fronds | Early bolting |

Common Problems & Fixes

| Symptom | Root Cause | Fix | |---------|------------|-----| | Poor, patchy germination | Old seed (viability drops sharply after 2 years) OR germination temp above 25°C | Use fresh seed; germinate at 18-20°C | | Rapid bolting to flower | Temps above 22°C; dill bolts readily in warm conditions | Keep below 21°C; use Dukat or Fernleaf dwarf variety for slower bolting | | Hollow, weak, floppy stems | Insufficient EC or boron deficiency | Raise EC to 1.4; ensure boron at 0.3-0.5 ppm in micronutrient solution | | Reduced essential oil / weak flavour at harvest | Harvested after umbels fully opened | Harvest when umbels have just elongated but before individual flowers open fully | | Yellowing of lower fronds | Normal senescence OR Fe deficiency | Check pH; if new fronds are green, it is natural aging |

Normal vs. Worry: What to Watch

  • Normal: Dill grows quickly and reaches 40-60cm in NFT or DWC within 5-6 weeks.
  • Normal: Lower fronds yellowing progressively as plant matures - natural aging of oldest tissue.
  • Worry: Germination below 50% with fresh seed - medium too warm (above 25°C) or too cold (below 10°C).
  • Worry: Stems hollow when cut - boron deficiency; add boron immediately at 0.3-0.5 ppm.
  • Worry: Umbels already fully open with white flowers - carvone has dropped; harvest was overdue.

Prevention Checklist

  • [ ] Use fresh seed only - dill seed viability drops significantly after 2 years
  • [ ] Germinate at 18-20°C; do not exceed 25°C during germination
  • [ ] Maintain solution below 21°C to delay bolting
  • [ ] Ensure boron at 0.3-0.5 ppm in micronutrient solution to prevent hollow stems
  • [ ] Harvest at first umbel elongation before individual florets open for maximum carvone
  • [ ] Check pH every 2-3 days; hold at 5.8-6.2
  • [ ] Use Fernleaf or Dukat varieties in warm grow rooms - slower bolting than common dill
