Dill is a fast-growing umbelliferous herb with moderate hydroponic nutrient demands and a clear essential-oil composition window tied to flowering stage. Its primary aroma compounds - carvone and limonene - accumulate to their peak between vegetative maturity and early umbel (flower cluster) elongation, then begin declining as flowers open. Managing the harvest window relative to this phenological stage is more impactful than any nutrient adjustment.

Deficiency Identification
- Weak or absent dill aroma: Either excess nitrogen diluting essential oils, or harvest past peak (umbels fully open). Reduce N concentration and check harvest timing.
- Tip dieback on frond ends: Calcium transport limitation. Increase airflow; verify Ca is at 120–180 ppm.
- Yellowing from oldest fronds upward: Nitrogen deficiency. Increase total EC slightly and confirm NO3-N is primary nitrogen form.
- Rapid bolting (umbel elongation) before plant is mature: Temperatures above 24°C or day length above 14 hours. Dill is a long-day plant and bolts in summer conditions. Reduce photoperiod or temperature.
Feeding Schedule Notes
Direct-sow dill into net cups if possible - it dislikes root disturbance from transplanting and may stall or bolt after repotting. Germinates in 7–14 days at 15–21°C. Start at EC 0.6–0.8 and step up to 1.0–1.2 over the first two weeks. Maintain conservative nitrogen throughout. The key harvest decision: once 4–6 distinct frond sets are established and the first umbel stem begins to elongate (but before any flowers open), this is peak carvone and limonene. Cut fronds at this stage for maximum flavour. If harvesting for frond production only (not seed), prevent umbel development by cutting plants regularly above the lowest 2–3 nodes.
