Microgreens grown hydroponically encounter surface mold, uneven germination, and etiolated stems from insufficient light as their most common failure modes. Understanding the crop's core thresholds - pH 5.5-6.5, EC 0.8-1.2 mS/cm, water temp 18-24°C, and 12-16h of daily light - helps diagnose problems before trays are lost.

Normal vs. Worry: What to Watch

  • Normal: Root hairs appear fuzzy and white when tray is lifted - these are root hairs, not mold (root hairs are fine and uniform; mold is cottony and clustered).
  • Normal: Seed hulls stuck to some cotyledons at day 2-3 - usually sheds naturally within 24h under light.
  • Worry: Gray or white cottony growth on the growing medium surface - mold; increase airflow, reduce surface moisture immediately.
  • Worry: Stems flopping sideways under their own weight - severely etiolated from insufficient light; move tray much closer to the fixture.
  • Worry: Cotyledons turning yellow on half or more of the tray - nutritional peak has passed; harvest immediately regardless of size.

Prevention Checklist

  • [ ] Bottom-water only from day 1 - never top-water microgreens after seeding
  • [ ] Ensure a small fan runs continuously to maintain airflow across the tray surface
  • [ ] Place light fixture 5-10cm above tray; check stem height at day 3 under light
  • [ ] Harvest at cotyledon stage before true leaves emerge and before any yellowing
  • [ ] Use a consistent seed density by weight per tray (e.g. 15g per 10x20cm tray for radish)
  • [ ] Keep blackout cover slightly elevated (1-2cm gap) for airflow during blackout phase
  • [ ] Rinse and sterilise trays between crops; reuse without sterilisation accumulates mold spores
