Hydroponics removes the variables that make Microgreens frustrating outdoors: inconsistent moisture, compacted soil, and seasonal weather. With precise pH, EC, and light control you can expect reliable, repeatable results year-round in an apartment or any indoor space.

Data point worth knowing: Independent lab analyses (including work cited by the USDA) found that radish and broccoli microgreens contain 10–40× higher concentrations of certain vitamins (C, E, beta-carotene) compared to mature counterparts by fresh weight - but this ratio drops significantly if microgreens are harvested after cotyledons yellow, which typically happens after day 12–14.

Key nutrients to monitor:

Keep pH within the stated range; nutrients become unavailable (locked out) when pH drifts even one unit outside the window. Check with a calibrated pH meter - pH pen strips are not accurate enough for hydroponics.


Step-by-step growing

  1. Spread seeds densely on a moistened germination mat or shallow tray with 1–2 cm growing medium (burlap, coco coir, or hydroponic pads).
  2. Cover and blackout for 3–4 days to encourage etiolation - longer stems with strong hooks.
  3. Uncover when seeds have germinated and place under lights 12–16 h/day.
  4. Bottom-water (pour into tray below the grow tray) to prevent damping off; top-water only lightly if needed.
  5. Harvest with scissors 2–3 mm above the medium when cotyledons are fully open but before true leaves emerge.
