Cilantro Nutrient, pH & EC Guide for Hydroponics

Cilantro's primary management challenge is bolting - sustained temperatures above 27°C trigger flowering within 10–14 days regardless of photoperiod, making temperature control more effective than light adjustment.

Cilantro is a cool-season herb with moderate nutrient demands and a notoriously short productive window due to its tendency to bolt under heat or stress. In hydroponic systems, where temperatures can rise from grow lights and pumps, managing ambient and solution temperature is the most critical factor for extending the harvest window. Nutrient management is relatively straightforward once temperature is controlled.

Deficiency Identification

  • Premature bolting (flower stem elongation): Temperature above 24–27°C is the primary cause. This is not a nutrient issue. Cool ambient air and reservoir temperatures first. Long days (above 14h) accelerate bolting once heat stress is present but are not the primary driver.
  • Tip dieback on young leaves: Calcium transport limitation. Increase airflow; check solution temperature is not above 22°C. Raise Ca to 150–180 ppm if airflow adjustment doesn't help.
  • Yellow-green older leaves with purple stems: Phosphorus deficiency. Check pH is below 7.0 and increase phosphorus concentration.
  • Slow germination: Cilantro seeds are actually a two-seeded fruit (the round husk contains two seeds). Crush gently or pre-soak 24–48h to improve germination speed.

Feeding Schedule Notes

Cilantro has a relatively fast production cycle - most varieties are harvest-ready 21–30 days from transplant at optimum temperatures. Start at EC 0.6–0.8 and step up to 1.0–1.4 once 3–4 true leaves are established. Succession plant every 10–14 days to maintain continuous harvest, as individual plants have a short productive window before bolting. The primary focus should be maintaining solution temperature at 15–21°C and ambient air temperature below 24°C. Successive cuts above the lowest leaf node can extend harvest slightly, but once bolting begins the essential-oil profile changes and leaves become sparse.

Research note: Sustained room temperatures above 27°C reliably trigger bolting within 10–14 days regardless of photoperiod - keeping below 24°C is more effective than reducing light hours.
