Perilla (shiso) is an aromatic Asian herb with two distinct types - green (ao-shiso) and red/purple (aka-shiso) - each with different essential-oil profiles and culinary applications. It is a strict short-day plant that flowers under any photoperiod shorter than 14 hours, and once flowering begins the leaf harvest window closes rapidly. Managing photoperiod is the single most impactful growing decision for perilla, far outweighing any nutrient adjustment.

Deficiency Identification
- Early flowering before plants reach production size: Photoperiod has dropped below 14 hours. This is the most critical management failure in perilla production. Immediately extend photoperiod to 14–16 hours using supplemental lighting at end of day. Do not adjust nutrients to manage this.
- Green-tinged leaves in red/purple shiso: Insufficient blue-spectrum light. Add blue LED component (440–480nm); nutrient adjustments will not produce red pigmentation.
- Loss of characteristic aroma: EC above 2.0 suppresses perillaldehyde synthesis. Reduce EC to 1.0–1.4.
- Pale yellowing from oldest leaves upward: Nitrogen deficiency. Increase EC by 0.2 mS/cm and verify NO3-N is primary nitrogen source.
Feeding Schedule Notes
Perilla seeds require light for germination - surface sow without covering seeds. Germination in 7–14 days at 20–25°C. From the first day of the grow cycle, establish a 14–16 hour photoperiod: this is non-negotiable for productive perilla management. At this photoperiod, plants can be maintained in the vegetative harvest phase for 3–4 months before flowering pressure becomes unmanageable. Start EC at 0.5–0.8 and step up to 1.0–1.4 over the first two weeks. Hold EC at 1.0–1.4 for best perillaldehyde content - do not push to 2.0+ in pursuit of yield. Harvest large outer leaves or make regular tip-cut harvests. For red/purple shiso, ensure a blue-spectrum LED component. Solution temperature at 20–25°C.
