Romaine Nutrient, pH & EC Guide for Hydroponics

Romaine requires 20 cm plant spacing for self-blanching and proper heart formation - crowding at 10 cm or less produces loose flat rosettes with no head development regardless of nutrient management.

Romaine lettuce is the most structurally demanding lettuce type in hydroponics. Its upright growth habit and characteristic tight inner heart require both the right spacing and appropriate EC management. Unlike loose-leaf varieties, romaine's quality depends heavily on physical growing conditions - particularly plant spacing - that allow the outer leaves to fold inward and create the self-blanching effect that produces pale, tender hearts.

Note on PPM: Values above use a 500 conversion factor (EC × 500 = PPM). Some meters use 700 - multiply by 1.4 to convert.

Deficiency Identification

  • No heart formation (loose flat rosette): Not a nutrient issue - plant spacing is insufficient. Romaine must have at least 20 cm centre-to-centre spacing for outer leaves to fold inward. Increase spacing before adjusting nutrients.
  • Inner-leaf tip burn: Calcium transport limitation. Add airflow, reduce solution temperature, and check Ca is at 150–200 ppm.
  • Floppy, oversized outer leaves: Excess nitrogen. Reduce total EC and shift formula away from ammonium nitrogen toward nitrate nitrogen.
  • Yellow uniform colour: Nitrogen or iron deficiency. Check EC hasn't dropped below 0.8 and pH is below 6.5 for iron availability.

Feeding Schedule Notes

Transplant romaine seedlings at 20 cm minimum centre-to-centre spacing - this is non-negotiable for proper head formation. In DWC channels, use wide spacing and run plants to 50–60 days for full-size heads, or 35–40 days for a smaller salad-size heart. Begin at EC 0.6–0.8 and step up to 0.8–1.2 through vegetative growth. In the final 7–10 days before anticipated harvest, raise EC slightly to 1.2–1.6 to firm up inner leaves and improve post-harvest shelf life. Maintain solution temperature between 18–22°C; temperatures above 24°C accelerate tip burn and reduce shelf life. Full reservoir changes every 7–10 days.
