In DWC systems, spacing plants at least 20 cm apart allows outer leaves to fold inward properly; crowding at 10 cm or less disrupts this and produces loose, flat rosettes with no heart.

Key nutrients to monitor:
- Calcium: critical to inner-leaf structure; tip burn on inner leaves signals low transpiration, not Ca deficiency

Keep pH within the stated range; nutrients become unavailable (locked out) when pH drifts even one unit outside the window. Check with a calibrated pH meter - pH pen strips are not accurate enough for hydroponics.
Step-by-step growing
- Germinate seeds in rockwool or rapid rooter plugs at 20–22 °C; emergence in 3–5 days.
- Transplant to DWC or NFT when roots reach 2 cm; space at least 20 cm apart.
- Set EC 0.8–1.2 for first two weeks; increase to 1.4–1.6 in final week.
- Run a small fan across the canopy to encourage calcium transport and prevent inner-leaf tip burn.
- Harvest the whole head by cutting 2 cm above the crown; or peel outer leaves for cut-and-come-again.
