Strawberries are one of the more rewarding and complex fruiting crops in hydroponics. Day-neutral varieties - which produce fruit continuously regardless of day length - have become the standard for indoor production, but they require careful EC management that changes substantially between establishment and fruiting phases. The potassium-to-nitrogen ratio shift during fruiting is the most important nutritional transition to manage correctly.

Note on PPM: Values above use a 500 conversion factor (EC × 500 = PPM). Some meters use 700 - multiply by 1.4 to convert.

Deficiency Identification
- Blossom end rot (dark sunken area on fruit tip): Calcium deficiency or transport limitation. Check Ca at 150–200 ppm, verify EC is not too high causing salt antagonism, and ensure adequate airflow.
- Hollow or seedy fruit with poor structure: Boron deficiency. Supplement B at 0.3–0.5 ppm carefully.
- Small, pale fruit with poor Brix: Potassium insufficient relative to nitrogen. Check K:N ratio and increase K toward 2:1 during fruiting.
- Slow establishment, few runners: May be a deliberate result of appropriate EC management. Day-neutral varieties channelling energy into runners rather than fruit is the more common problem - remove runners at establishment.
Feeding Schedule Notes
Plant day-neutral varieties (Albion, Seascape, Portola) at EC 1.2–1.4 and hold there for the first 3–4 weeks of establishment, removing all runners and first flower trusses that appear during this period. This redirection of energy establishes a strong root system and crown. Once the crown is well-established and second-generation flowers appear, step up to EC 1.6–1.8, shifting the nutrient formula to favour K:N 2:1. At consistent fruiting, maintain EC 1.8–2.0. A good hydroponic strawberry formula uses a two-part approach: a growth formula at establishment, switching to a bloom/fruiting formula at first harvest. Solution temperature at 18–22°C; temperatures above 25°C reduce fruit flavour and firmness.
