Data point worth knowing: Day-neutral strawberry varieties (such as Albion and Seascape) flower and fruit based on temperature, not daylength, and they perform best when nutrient EC is stepped up to 1.8–2.0 mS/cm during fruiting but dropped back to 1.4 mS/cm during vegetative establishment - plants that receive high EC from transplant show measurably lower runner production and delayed first fruit set.

Key nutrients to monitor:

  • Potassium: highest demand during fruit swelling; K:N ratio should increase to 2:1 at fruiting
  • Calcium and boron: prevent blossom end rot and hollow fruit
  • Phosphorus: promotes root development in establishment phase

Keep pH within the stated range; nutrients become unavailable (locked out) when pH drifts even one unit outside the window. Check with a calibrated pH meter - pH pen strips are not accurate enough for hydroponics.


Step-by-step growing

  1. Start from certified runners or plugs (not seed); choose day-neutral variety.
  2. Root runners in dilute nutrient solution EC 0.8–1.2 for 2 weeks.
  3. Once established, increase EC to 1.6–1.8 as flowers appear.
  4. Hand-pollinate flowers with a soft brush or small vibrating tool if no pollinators are present indoors.
  5. Pinch the first 2–3 flower clusters on young plants to redirect energy to root establishment.

Common problems

Regular harvesting is not just practical - it usually encourages the plant to produce more. Harvesting too infrequently often leads to bolting (in leafy crops) or quality decline.
