DWC produces tighter, more compact butterhead lettuce than NFT because constant root submersion prevents the slight water-stress cycles between NFT flows that disrupt closed-head formation.

Butter lettuce (butterhead) is the most delicate-textured lettuce type and one of the most valuable at retail. Its quality - defined by a tightly folded, pale inner heart and smooth, tender outer leaves - depends on consistent root-zone moisture more than almost any other variable. The system choice between DWC and NFT has a measurable impact on head quality: DWC's constant root submersion better maintains the condition that produces closed, restaurant-quality heads.

Deficiency Identification

  • Loose, open head with no inner heart (rosette form): Most likely a system issue (NFT stress cycles) or spacing too tight, not a nutrient problem. Switch to DWC for closed-head production. Also verify plant spacing is at least 20 cm.
  • Inner-leaf tip burn: Calcium transport limitation. Add airflow and reduce solution temperature below 22°C before adjusting Ca concentration.
  • Slightly bitter outer leaves: EC above 1.6 or excess nitrogen. Reduce EC to 1.0–1.4 and maintain nitrate-only N source.
  • Pale uniform yellowing: Nitrogen or iron deficiency. Check EC has not dropped below 0.8 and pH is below 6.5 for iron availability.

Feeding Schedule Notes

Butter lettuce performs best in DWC systems where constant root submersion ensures the consistency required for closed-head formation. Start seedlings at EC 0.5–0.8 and step up to 0.8–1.0 in the vegetative phase. In the final 10–14 days, a slight EC increase to 1.0–1.4 firms up outer leaves and improves post-harvest shelf life without introducing bitterness. If using NFT, increase flow frequency to reduce the dry period between irrigation cycles. Maintain solution temperature between 18–22°C. Maintain pH at 5.5–6.0 for optimum iron availability. Target 40–50 day production cycle from transplant. Full reservoir changes every 7–10 days.
