Green onions (scallions) are among the most practical hydroponic crops for quick-cycle production. Their allium chemistry - sulfur compounds that produce the characteristic pungent flavour - is driven primarily by sulfur availability in the nutrient solution. An underappreciated production shortcut is the use of supermarket scallion stumps for rapid regrowth, which provides a dramatically shorter time-to-harvest than seed production.

Deficiency Identification
- Pale, flavourless leaves: Sulfur deficiency. The most impactful deficiency for eating quality in any allium crop. Supplement SO4 immediately.
- Yellowing from leaf tips downward: Nitrogen deficiency at low EC. Increase total EC and check N is predominantly nitrate form.
- Soft or collapsing stems: Potassium deficiency or excess nitrogen causing overly succulent growth. Reduce N, increase K, and confirm stems are receiving adequate airflow.
- Slow, uneven germination from seed: Normal for allium family. Chitting seeds (pre-soaking 24h in warm water) improves uniformity.
Feeding Schedule Notes
For seed production, start at EC 0.8–1.0 and expect 10–14 days to germination followed by a 6–8 week grow cycle. For rapid production via stump regrowth, cut supermarket scallions leaving 3–4 cm of base with intact roots, place directly in shallow NFT channels at EC 1.4–1.6, and harvest regrowth in 7–10 days. This method can be cycled 2–3 times from a single stump before rooting capacity declines. Ensure adequate sulfur throughout - sulfate is the primary determinant of allium flavour. Maintain solution temperature between 15–22°C; green onions are cool-season crops that tolerate near-freezing solution temperatures but grow fastest at 18–22°C.
